Put First Things First Put First Things First

Today’s session was based on one of Stephen Covey’s habits: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST. The key to self-management is knowing how to ‘put things first’ – and being able to actually determine what these ‘first things’ are! We discussed Covey’s four quadrants of spending time, determined by either urgency or importance. Looking at the quadrants, everyone identified for themselves how much time they spent in the different quadrants. Quadrant 2 activities were identified as being the ones that produce the biggest results and effectiveness. We discussed ways of getting to spend more time on quadrant 2 activities, and other things that could be reduced because they were neither important nor urgent! We discussed different ways of managing time, and aspects that ‘fourth generation’ time management encompasses: coherence, balance, focus, people, flexibility and portability. ‘Stewardship’ delegation was presented and discussed as being a tool for increasing personal effectiveness, as well as empowering others. The session provided some new ideas regarding time and self-management for people and refreshed others’ memories regarding personal effectiveness. Everyone left with new insights, either ready to plan their week in new ways, or having gotten new ideas from others regarding effective self-management and ‘putting first things first’.

This session was very helpful. Its all about priorities and being able to differentiate between the Urgent and Important issues on a day-to-day basis.

I also need to finishing reading Coveys book :)

Discipline versus Priority

An interesting idea I got out of this session is the possibility that the reason we do not do things we are supposed to is not because we do not have discipline but because we do not put enough priority on the things we do not do. I would be interested to hear what others have to say about this idea.

Put first things first...

I found this session a time to reflect on the urgency and importance of what we do daily. TIME IS A VALUABLE RESOURCE, A MOST PRECIOUS COMMODITY; WE SHOULD BE MORE AWARE OF HOW WE USE OUR TIME!

The 4 Quadrants was very intersting to me as I could reflect how efficient I use my time on a daily basis. Very useful session as managing our time is very important to entrepreneurs. We were introduced to an time management matrix where we estimate the percentage time we spend in each quadrant and log it every 15 min. Very useful to see where you spend your time.
