Tony Mallam provides feedback on the first Velociti Finance session:
Tuesday April 16 saw the first session of the Velociti Finance training, a voluntary part of the Velociti 2008 programme. Expecting less than half of the 15 participating companies to be there, due to the intimidating nature of the topic, I was astounded to see a full house! Having promised to ease them in gently to the Finance course, the first session kicked off with a discussion about the basic records a business needs to create and keep, various accpounting packages, good resources for the entrepreneur and some initial accounting terminology. Thanks to the group for making it such an interactive session!

Finance, knowing the numbers is crucial to business success

The Finance session held recently by Tony Mallam was an introduction to what lies ahead for us as start-up entrepreneurs. I think most business people out there would benefit from what we are currently learning. I certainly had no idea how I should be approaching my accounting and financial records and this is an area I find extremely challenging.

Though the session was not compulsory most of the VeloCITI companies attending and by the sounds we're all needing some major help in getting our figures working for us. many of the entrepreneurs shared their accounting practices and resources with each other and already I've got a much better idea of how to go about planning the financial side of my business.

I'm even excited to start doing some of my accounts myself, though I have a long way to go and loads to learn before I think I will be fully capable. I didn't take on accounting as a subject in Secondary school, but i do feel having some skills in financial management is a core skill any school should be imparting to students as we inevitably will need these skills later in our lives if not to run our own businesses then for our own personal financial planning.

I have noticed the need in the last few months since I started my business to keep regular records of all transactions, but never really had a procedure or method and the Finance module came along just in time to give me the skills I need to keep things in order.

Looking forward to future sessions Tony, thanks VeloCITI for the skills we're getting on this program, I cannot begin to quantify the effect it is having on how I go about doing business.

The thought of attending the finance sessions seemed very daunting to me initially. The whole practicality of the finacial aspect overwhelmed me. The encouragement and reassurance from Tony, that he was going to ease us in gently; literally removed all elements of fear within me. Thanks Tony. :-)

Tony promised to start off gently and he kept to his word. This was a still a great learning experience and I certainly look forward to these finance sessions. The growth of our companies are in essence measured by finances, and this is certainly a passion of mine.

I had so many uncertainities about my accounting in that I knew I needed to do something but was not sure what the essential and basic accounting requirements are. This session helped me massively.

I had to meet with the manager of accounting firm that I wanted to outsource my book keeping at 3:00PM after the session. I could really ask straight the services that I wanted from the company instead of behaving like a lost sheep in the meeting.

This session was a nice overview for me in terms of my finance. It was good to see that I am on the right track. And decrease the burden of some unknown SARS issues like income tax etc.

Financial Q&A

The introduction to financial statements was very informative and highlighted the need for a company to keep its records in check. The real value for me was the financial questions that we could ask Tony...burning financial and tax questions that needed to be answered...Thanx Tony

Thanks
